Belladonna

Classical single remedy

sudden hot, red, throbbing complaints with a burning fever, dilated pupils and no thirst; worse jarring and light. (Boericke)

What it’s reached for

  • a fever or headache that flares up fast, with a red face and throbbing.
  • an acutely red, hot sore throat or earache.

Headache — Belladonna vs. Bryonia vs. Nux Vomica vs. Gelsemium: sudden onset, throbbing, hot red face, worse light/noise/jar/lying down, better semi-erect. Hahnemann's original proving confirms "confusion of the head; worse during movement" (proving #27) and "whole head feels heavy, as from intoxication" (#66).

Fever — Aconite vs. Belladonna vs. Gelsemium vs. Arsenicum: high fever, throbbing, dry burning heat, red face, notably **no thirst**.

Sore Throat / Tonsillitis — Belladonna vs. Hepar Sulph vs. Mercurius vs. Apis: sudden violent onset, throat bright red, dry and burning, worse on the right side, worse swallowing liquids, high fever with a hot flushed face.

Earache — Belladonna vs. Chamomilla vs. Pulsatilla vs. Hepar Sulph vs. Ferrum Phosphoricum: sudden onset, throbbing tearing pain, the ear and face hot and red, worse on the right side, worse at night and from cold.

Potency: 30C every 1–2 hours at the peak; reduce as the heat and throb settle.
